Mumbai The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has made an advance payment of Rs 9.8 crore to Tata power for producing electricity for the much awaited phase II of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).

According to Prakash Rao Vazalwar, chief operations manager, MRVC, of the Rs 13 crore which the rail infrastructure agency is to pay for generating electricity, Rs 9.8 crore has been paid as an advance. The money would be used by TATA for laying cables and buying new equipment for the suburban section.

“The money has been paid for getting electricity as, under the MUTP Phase II, the section between Thane and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) is to switch to alternate current,” said Vazalwar.

The WR, currently, needs 130 MW of electricity for running the suburban section and after DC to AC conversion, the demand would increase by 150 MW. Central Railway needs 244 MW of electricity and with DC to AC conversion, it would require 300 megawatt.
