Kolkata Minister for municipal affairs and urban development Ashok Bhattacharya laid the foundation of Rs 292-crore project for constructing an elevated road corridor from Park Circus to Parama Island on Friday.

The project has been sanctioned under the JNNURM scheme in which 35 per cent of the project cost will be borne by the Centre. Rest of the project cost will be funded by the state and the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). The project will be executed by the KMDA.

The 4.34-kilometre long elevated road will be a four-lane one. Two intermediate lanes have been proposed that will connect the elevated road to the AJC flyover.

The elevated road is specially mooted to reduce traffic congestion near Milan Mela fair grounds. Bhattacharya said the project will be completed 30 months from the date of commissioning.
