Ahmedabad Former member of planning commission Y K Alagh on Wednesday said the future of Gujarat will depend on long-term energy planning as it is one of the fastest growing regions in the world.

He was speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the fifth Biennial Conference of Indian Society of Ecological Economics (INSEE) at Gujarat Vidyapeeth. Expressing concern over projected non-availability of land and fuel to implement MoUs in energy sector, Alagh said when Minister for Industries Saurabh Patel was asked why is it that on energy side very few MoU's have been implemented, the minister said we have land and fuel problem.

According to estimates, nearly one third of the MoUs in the energy sector could not be implemented.

“We need better regulators, need to follow through more of vibratory policies so that our Minister does not have to say that a large number of MoUs in the energy sector could not be implemented due to shortage of land and fuel,” he added.

“The question is when we are proceeding in an unprepared way, I am not blaming the state government. But then everything is in air,” Alagh said

In a study conducted by the Institute of Economic Growth, it has been highlighted that even after the completion of the Sardar Sarovar project, the per capita availability of water in the state will be less than one third of the minimal demand of people, Alagh said.
