Engg student held for extortion bid

Lucknow The Bulandshahr police arrested an youth on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 50 lakh from a leading doctor.

The accused, engineering student Vivek Pratap Singh, is the son of an Additional District Government Counsel. According to the police, he had issued threats to SK Garg, owner of Garg Hospital at Khurja. “Dr Garg informed me regarding the extortion calls,” said SK Bhagat, Senior Superintendent of Police, Bulandshahr. “The anonymous caller used to threaten Garg and his wife, Dr Shobha, and demand Rs 50 lakh,” her added.

Bhagat pressed the Special Operation Group into action and the phone numbers of the complainant and the suspect were put on surveillance.

Bhagat said: “We traced the whereabouts of the suspect and picked him up today. A resident of Hans Vihar Colony in Kotwali area, Vivek confessed to have been issuing life threats and trying to extort.”

The accused revealed that he had targetted the doctor couple after realising that one of his acquaintances had extorted a hefty amount from Dr Garg in the past. Vivek had been pursuing a diploma in aircraft engineering from a private college in Gurgaon.
