Chandigarh A 28-year-old engineer with a private company died after his car rammed into a truck at the Transport area traffic light in Sector-26 late last night. The impact of the collision was such that the front portion of the car went under the truck and firemen had to cut the roof of the wreckage to rescue the victim.

The deceased has been identified as Vikrant Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh, and was living here in Sector 2, Panchkula.

According to police, Kumar was returning home at 2 am last night, when he hit a truck coming from the Tribune side. The police said the car was at high speed and hit at the middle of the truck. “The truck had almost crossed almost the traffic light point when the car crashed into it. The impact was so hard that the entire front portion of the car went beneath of the truck, which overturned due to the collision,” said the police.

The police received the information about the accident from a passerby and reached the spot with an ambulance. The victim, however, could not be pulled out of the wreckage and the police had to call in the fire brigade to cut open the roof of the car.

Kumar was then rushed to the PGI where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the truck, Lokesh Thapar said he was coming from Delhi with vegetables. “I was driving at normal speed and had almost crossed the signal, when the car hit the middle part of the truck. I lost balance and collided with a electricity pole. The steering hit my abdomen and the cleaner also sustained injuries after his head smashed into the windscreen. The impact was so hard that it broke the shaft of the truck into two pieces,” Thapar told the media.

A case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence has been registered against the driver and the parents of the victim have been informed, said the police.
