Lucknow Even as the Auraiya police were trying to obtain property attachment orders of BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari’s local representative Manjul Pandey — one of the accused in engineer MK Gupta murder case — he called up a Circle Officer rank officer on Friday, pleading his innocence.

The location of the accused was traced in Mumbai on the basis of the call details, a source in Auraiya police said.

He also tried to convince the police that MLA’s wife Vibha Tiwari was also innocent.

When asked to surrender before the police and provide evidence ruling out his involvement in the case, Pandey refused to comply saying that he would never come to Auraiya.

However, later he told the police that he and Vibha were considering surrendering before BP Singh, Inspector General (IG), Kanpur Zone.

When contacted, Singh said: “The police team investigating the case has got some leads about Vibha and Pandey’s location and they will be arrested soon.”

Rubbishing Pandey’s claims, DK Rai, Circle Officer, Auraiya, said the police investigation has revealed that Vibha and Pandey tried to either destroy or conceal the evidences related to the engineer’s murder on December 24. Rai had interrogated the main accused in the case — Shekhar Tiwari and his aide Vinay Tiwari. He is also assisting the police in the probe.

A few days ago, the Auraiya police had sought help of the Ghaziabad police for interrogating two brothers of Vibha.

According to Vijay Bhushan, Additional SP (City), Ghaziabad, Vibha’s two brothers were questioned by the police to trace the absconding accused and properties owned by the MLA in Ghaziabad. “They were released after the interrogation and the details were passed on to the Auraiya police. They failed to provide us any clue on the wherebouts of the accused,” Bhushan said.
