Kolkata Two students of an engineering college drowned this afternoon while on a trip to Damodar.

Rajiv Ranjan and Anuj Kumar, final year students of Durgapur Engineering College, had gone to Randiha in Burdwan for an outing when the incident occurred. Ranjan was a student of Information Technology and Kumar a student of Electrical Engineering.

Locals say that the two boys, along with some other friends, decided to take a boat ride to the middle of the river. A while later two friends came back to the shore and reported that Ranjan and Kumar had fallen in the river.

Locals ran to the spot and tried to rescue the two but one of them had already drowned by then. The other died on way to hospital. The friends claimed that Ranjan and Kumar accidentally fell in the river.

Both are residents of Patna. Their bodies have been taken to the Sub-Divisional hospital in Durgapur.

Locals also claimed that the river, situated between Burdwan and Bankura, becomes a juridictional issue and everytime there is an accident, it is they who have to jump into the river to rescue the victims.
