Pune The Erin Nosh Nagarwalla Boarding School (ENNS) had a field day at the inaugural PSAA inter school touch rugby tournament held at the Vikhe Patil Memorial School on Saturday, after they won the boys under-12 and under-14 section.

They beat hosts Vikhe Patil in the final of the under-12 and the under-14 category to make a clean sweep of the trophies in the boy's section. In the girl's under-14 section, KFANDRA beat hosts Vikhe Patil in the final. The best player award for the under-12 category went to Atharva Kulkarni of Khare's Football and Rugby Academy. The honour went to Vishal Gunjawade of ENNS boarding in the under-14 boys section and to Lakshika Patel of Bharatiya Vidyapeeth in the under-14 girl's section.

"The tournament went off much better than I expected. The credit for this must go to PDRFA and KFANDRA backroom staff, coaches and the volunteers. The players enjoyed themselves thoroughly. I was well impressed with how much the players picked up even though we held such few sessions. I was especially impressed with ENNS as they played some good rugby", said Surhud Khare, organiser-in-chief of this tournament and coach of the KFANDRA.

There were, in all, four schools (Vikhe Patil Memorial School, Dastur School, Bharatiya Vidyapeeth, English Medium) and one rugby academy (KFANDRA) that participated in this tournament. In the breakfast interval, the players from the various schools witnessed a full contact rugby match at the hands of the KFANDRA senior players. "Touch rugby is just a step towards contact rugby and I was delighted with the positive reactions from the girls and the boys after witnessing the exhibition match. This will make the introduction of contact rugby much easier", said Khare. Also present among the organisers was international rugby player, Sandeep 'Hammer' Singh, who has been working closely with the PDRFA for the development of rugby in Pune. He too, was of the opinion that the tournament was smoothly run.

"The basic of these players were good. Vishal from ENNS really impressed me with his pace and quick movement. Our plan is to hold two or three more touch rugby tournaments so that the players can get further acquainted with the rules and regulations of the sport. Also we want to get more schools involved so that we can make it a regular tournament in the sporting calendar of the schools", said Sandeep Singh.

According to the sports director of Vikhe Patil Memorial School, Ashok Gunjal, his players thoroughly enjoy playing this sport. "We have a good response from our school children for this sport. We conduct practice sessions every alternate afternoon in which Surhud Khare coaches the kids", said Gunjal.
