Chandigarh Canadian minister Harinder S Takhar, from the Ministry of Small Business and Consumer Services, on a visit to the city on Monday spoke about the career opportunities available in Canada.

He said Canada would need engineers in the future. “A cabinet committee has been constituted back home to look into the opportunities in making devices such as solar panels and wind mills. For this, we would need work force from India. The population of Canada is ageing, while that in India is majorly constituted by the youth. There are ample opportunities for students who want to come to Canada,” said Takhar.

The minister expressed the possibility of tie-ups between Canada and India in the fields of education, agriculture, dairy farming, power distribution and mining.

He said, “Joint degree programmes can be started in collaboration with institutes here. Faculty as well as student exchange can also take place. I have been told that there are huge transmission losses during power distribution here. We can offer expertise in this area.”

Takhar said he had already spoken to the Punjab Government officials about starting a portal to facilitate interaction between people from the industry.
