Kanpur, January 2 In order to facilitate research on environmental pollution, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) has set up a Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering in its campus, which will be inaugurated on January 8.

“It will be inaugurated by former Infosys chief Narayan Murthy and BJP MP Arun Shourie,” IIT-K Registrar Sanjiv Kashalkar said.

The centre, which houses a modern laboratory, has been enlisted by TERI (Tata Energy Research Institute), Gurgaon in the category of one of the best “green houses” in the country.

“This centre is the first of its kind at the IIT, which has been built keeping in mind all the environmental factors thus making it completely eco-friendly,” Kashalkar said.

It aims at promoting research on air and water pollution specifically, he said, adding that the institute also plans to introduce a specialised course in Environmental Science in, which BTech students will also be included.

The centre has been built with an estimated cost of Rs 11 crore, provided by Arun Shourie from his MP LADs (Local Area Developments) fund.
