In Thailand and Indonesia, where the Ramayan is a popular fable, this elaborate performance has traditionally been put up for the King’s court. It is a vibrant dance drama, performed with great enthusiasm by the troupe that consists of an orchestra, narrators and actors, with the mask being an integral part of the depiction.
“Masks were introduced from the desire to have a more permanent way of identifying the characters,” said Pipat Pong, member, board of directors, Sala Chalermkrung Khon. Most performers are in the twenties and are trained in this skill at a young age.
Rataporn, 24, who played Hanuman started training from the age of 4. “It is a passion and great privilege for me to be able to play Hanuman,” he smiled. Timothy who is a performer and a teacher started at the age of 12. He played a lion in the depiction. “My mother persuaded me to take part in the Ramakien,” said he. If all goes well, the troupe plans to stage further shows in Kolkata.
