Ludhiana Dr Deepak Saxena was elevated to the post of Medical Superintendent at the ESIC Model Hospital in the city in May this year. A graduate from the Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi in 1973, he had left for Zambia soon after but later joined the ESI Corporation as a medical officer. In a conversation with Sameer Kumar Sharma, he shares the progress made by the ESIC Hospital in the recent past and the road ahead.

What are new changes that have recently been introduced at the ESIC Model Hospital?
We have pioneered the introduction of the AYUSH facility in the city. The patients who wish to opt for alternative forms of medicine such as Ayurveda or homeopathy can avail of the facility at the hospital’s newly effected ward AYUSH.

Has the AYUSH ward started functioning?
Yes, the ward has its out-patients department. In addition, we have also made the provision for 10 beds in case patients want to get admitted. One yoga instructor has also started discharging his duties at the hospital.

How would you describe the hospital since questions are raised by some people over the standards of the ESIC Model Hospital?
The bed occupancy of the hospital has gone up to 100 per cent from 45 per cent in 2002. It has now become a 200-bedded from the earlier 100-bed capacity. The hospital also got an ISO certificate from the Bureau of Indian Standards in 2008.

What about the standards in the operation theatre in the hospital?
We are going to have six state-of-the-art operation theatres next year.
There will be four small operation theatres and one modular operation theatre. As for the tertiary care, the hospital has tied up with big hospitals too.
