New Delhi Essar Oil today announced that it will close down its 10.5-million tonne refinery at Vadinar in Jamnagar district for annual maintenance and inspection of its various units.

The refinery will remain closed for 18 days starting from April 13, said the company in a statement.

This is the first planned turnaround by the company since commencement of commercial production at the refinery in May 2008. The refinery currently operates at a capacity of 2,40,000 barrels a day.

“During the shutdown, it is proposed to take up certain jobs as part of the refinery’s ongoing expansion programme,” said the statement.

Essar is planning to expand its refining capacity to 16 million tonnes by December 31, 2010.
