Surat The Additional District and Sessions Court convicted a retired police official for two years for accepting bribe in 2001, here on Thursday.

Judge S G Pathan also imposed a penalty of Rs 2,000 on the convict, Savji Choudhary, under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Choudhary has been granted bail and 30 days’ time to challenge the verdict in the Gujarat High Court. Sources in the court said the convict would be arrested if he fails to move the high court within a month.

Choudhary, who was an inspector posted at the Katargam police station in Surat, was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 on July 27, 2001.

According to the case details, he had demanded Rs 50,000 from one cable operator, Goverdhan Patel.

Following this, Patel approached the ACB and lodged a complaint against the police inspector on July 26. Next day, ACB officials laid a trap at Katargam and caught Choudhary accepting Rs 10,000 from Patel as the first instalment of the bribe amount.
