New Delhi Senior Congress councillor and former mayor Farhad Suri was caught smoking in the lobby of the municipal headquarters at Town Hall on Thursday. The MCD had declared the Town Hall premises a no-smoking zone following the order by Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, banning smoking in public places.

BJP councillor Rekha Gupta, who also heads the Women and Child Welfare committee of the MCD, has made a written complaint to Mayor Arti Mehra against Suri’s conduct. In her complaint, Gupta has alleged that there have been several occasions when Suri was spotted smoking inside the Town Hall. “It is a violation of law and the former mayor should apologise for his conduct,” said Gupta.

Suri admits his fault but alleges he is being targeted by the BJP. “I am ready to apologise for my mistake. But I am not the only one smoking in the Town Hall,” said Suri. He alleged it was the BJP councillors’ ploy to divert the attention of the House from the Budget discussion.
