Vadodara While hyperactive students with short attention span are dubbed as the mischief mongers of the class, the issue of unattended cases of Learning Disability (LD) among school children is of paramount importance.

Moreover, a large number of LD cases go undetected in students due to the lack of standard LD assessment module in the country and the low level of awareness among teachers as well as parents.

The Navrachna School and the Vadodara Psychiatric Association on Friday initiated a workshop for psychiatrists and school teachers on early identification and detection of LD students in class.

The workshop was addressed by Massarat Khan, clinical psychologist and CEO of the Maharashtra Dyslexia Association (MDA).

While a survey shows that 10 to 15 per cent of the population suffers from learning disability, most of the cases go unnoticed.

"Although CBSE and ICSE board schools have started addressing the problem, many state board schools do not accept LD as a neurological disability," Khan said.

She added: "There is a dearth of specialists who diagnose the disability. This has also led to confusion among school teachers, psychiatrists and parents."

Pubali Bose, consultant at the Kashiben Gordhandas Patel Children Hospital (KGPCH), said that the lack of any standard format of assessing LD has added to the confusion.

"There is no standard way of monitoring LD due to cultural, social and linguistic differences. An assessing battery has been developed in a Pune-based institute, but it is not being used extensively," Bose said.
