The District Ex-servicemen’s Association general secretary Tapan Chaudhury said they were not demanding anything outside the ambit of law. “The government of India has laid down a law that government hospitals in the states should employ ex-servicemen as security guards. These days, there are 18-20-year-olds guarding hospitals who know nothing about security. We have been trained for the job,” said Chaudhury, who heads the Association that has around 4,500 ex-servicemen.
He said the government had laid down the rule that the ex-servicemen would be paid Rs 3,500 as salary per month whereas these young boys can be hired for as little as Rs 1,000-1,500 a month.
Chaudhury said they had been agitating for the past 10 years and although he had managed to get a few employed in a couple of sub-divisional hospitals, most were forced to quit as they were paid only Rs 1,000 as salary.
