Kolkata The ex-servicemen of Cooch Behar on Monday demonstrated outside the office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) demanding their recruitment in the district government hospital. Cooch Behar has four sub-divisional hospitals in Haldibari, Mathabhanga, Dinhata and Tufanganj, besides a district hospital in Cooch Behar.

The District Ex-servicemen’s Association general secretary Tapan Chaudhury said they were not demanding anything outside the ambit of law. “The government of India has laid down a law that government hospitals in the states should employ ex-servicemen as security guards. These days, there are 18-20-year-olds guarding hospitals who know nothing about security. We have been trained for the job,” said Chaudhury, who heads the Association that has around 4,500 ex-servicemen.

He said the government had laid down the rule that the ex-servicemen would be paid Rs 3,500 as salary per month whereas these young boys can be hired for as little as Rs 1,000-1,500 a month.

Chaudhury said they had been agitating for the past 10 years and although he had managed to get a few employed in a couple of sub-divisional hospitals, most were forced to quit as they were paid only Rs 1,000 as salary.
