With work stress and pollution causing a number of eye-related illnesses, it's high time that people took notice of the problems

Long hours in front of a computer screen, dodging edgy traffic and heavy pollution on the city streets, and even wearing eye make up for extended periods of time can definitely go a long way in increasing the wear and tear of one's eyes. Besides work and personal stresses too contribute a healthy share towards the same.

Dr Vrushali Warde, an ophthalmologist says, "To a very large extent the stressed lifestyle of most working people is the reason behind they suffering from various eye problems. The most common ones being; having eyestrains and a burning sensation in the eyes."

The most common reason behind this is the vast majority of the city population using two-wheelers and secondly it is because of the long hours that people spend within confined work spaces which devoids them of natural sunlight which is good for the eyes, she adds.

Tanmayee Tendulkar, a first year science student says, "I used to wear eye liner and also apply kohl (kajal) during my initial days in college however I realised that kajal attracts a lot of dust and owing to the severe pollution in the city I started developing eye problems. Now i have stopped using eye makeup and started wearing big shades whenever I am traveling in the city."

The most common age group is between 18-35 years, and the common problems that they face are either computer vision syndrome, or refractive error. Also owing to the pollution in the city more and more people fall easy prey to problems like conjunctivitis and ocular allergies.

Shailesh Khachane a computer engineer says, "Owing to the long hours that I spend in front of the computer my eyesight was affected and I had to start wearing glasses. Now however after my doctor's advice I use anti reflective screens on the computer which seems to work okay for me."

Explaining about the problem of Computer Vision Syndrome, Dr Aditya Kelkar, says, "Basically owing to the long hours people spend in front of the computers their eyes start losing the moisture and drying up, due to this they experience an itching sensation in the eyes. If not treated early it can lead to refractive errors, which in turn can lead to weak vision."

Sudip Barve an optician says, "We have mostly working professionals coming in here for either getting specific number glasses made or even to buy protective eyewear. Some of the things that people can do are go in for regular eye check up to ensure that their eyes are not getting strained."

Seconding that opinion is Dr Vasant Gandhi, who says, "People who work in front of computers for a long time should take breaks frequently. While traveling on two wheelers they should either wear helmets, which is the best option, or wear good quality goggles, which offer enough protection from the UV rays of the sun and of course the dust and pollution. Also one must wash his or her eyes with cold water at least 8-10 times a day."

Working long hours and traveling in dust laden environments is something that most people might not be able to escape but they can definitely take some basic precautions in ensuring that they have a long and healthy eyesight, says Dr Kelkar.
