Lucknow The inquiry committee formed by the state government to investigate the cataract operations that lead to severe eye infection in 25 patients has said at least five patients may lose their vision.

On Tuesday, the committee members visited the patients at the CSMMU and the health centre in Sarojini Nagar and collected the samples. “It would be difficult for at least five patients to regain their vision,” said a member.

Twenty-two patients with eye infection were admitted  late on Monday night and three more were admitted on Tuesday.

They were operated for cataract at Sarojini Nagar Health Centre, managed by the CSMMU. Eighteen patients have been re-operated but doctors could restore normal vision of only five. The possibility that the remaining patients regain their vision is still quite slim.

“It is difficult to attribute any one cause for the infection. We are waiting for laboratory reports of the samples,” said V D Mishra, the Director of the UP wing of National Blindness Control Programme.
