Kolkata Sankara Nethralaya, a Chennai-based eye institute inaugurated recently in the city, commenced its community van service from Friday. The institute's three vans will conduct eye tests in remote villages of the state and transmit the results to the main hospital at Mukundapur on the EM Bypass, where it will be evaluated. The service is expected to reduce multiple trips that patients in rural areas have to make to their nearest towns for eye check-ups.

According to the institute, an optometrist, a social worker and a driver will accompany the vans, which will have the facility to make spectacles.

Patients will be screened and brought to the base hospital for surgical treatment, especially for cataract. Following the surgery, they will be sent back to their villages and will be brought back again to the main hospital three to four weeks later for a detailed examination, including spectacle dispensation. Vans will have the facility to educate villagers about common eye ailments.
