Facelift of railway stations

New Delhi, March 5 The current financial year is likely to be a great one for Northern Railways: many of its development projects are likely to finish by the end of 2008 or early 2009. The most anticipated among these is the new terminal building at the New Delhi railway station, being constructed along the lines of many of Lutyen’s Delhi structures. It is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore. Located on the Ajmeri Gate side of the station, the building is being constructed by Northern Railways’ construction departments, and is likely to be ready by mid-2009.

* 15 current booking centres and 9 enquiry centres
* Arrival-cum-departure hall for passengers
* Passenger amenities like food plaza, cloak room, tourist information, water booth, pay-and-use public toilets, sitting area, luggage counter, sitting lounge for reserved premium class passengers

* Dedicated service corridors for movement of parcels, food and linen.

First floor
* 18 current booking and 9 enquiry centres
* Air-conditioned sitting lounge for ladies, sleeper class and upper class (exclusively for passengers with confirmed reservations)

* ATM, shopping area, cyber café, STD booths, pay-and-use toilets, water booths, luggage counters

* Retiring rooms
* Air-conditioned dormitories

* Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) lobby
* Facilities like shopping, cyber café and toilets.

Parking facility
* Multilevel parking lots connected to Paharganj and Ajmeri gate entrances
* Nearly 23,000 sq mtr area will be allotted for Parking. Nearly 6000 cars will be able to park at any given time.
* Provision for an underground parking lot at Ajmeri Gate side is also being considered

HAZRAT NIZAMUDDIN
The existing terminal building on the main entry to Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station, too, is undergoing massive upgrade. To create space, an additional floor is being added. The estimated cost of the renovation project is an approximate Rs 2.5 crore. It is likely to be completed by the begining of 2009. Also on the cards is a new booking hall on the 2nd entry to the station at Sarai Kale Khan-end. This is being built for UTS passengers and will include a waiting hall for their exclusive use. The project cost: approximately Rs 80 lakh.

* Touch-screen enquiry system

* Separate arrival and departure areas for speedy entry and exit

* 2 air-conditioned waiting halls
* 2 non air-conditioned waiting halls
* VIP lounge
* Tourist information centre
