‘Failures are inevitable, but they should not bother us’

Success is something we all crave for and it has a different meaning for each one of us. To some it means wealth, for others it is synonymous with recognition, good health, good family, happiness, satisfaction and peace of mind among other things.

But what matters at the end of the day is how that success is achieved. In fact, the path to success depends on many factors — planning, execution, and a certain amount of hardwork and dedication.

Being successful in life also depends on your belief in the self. David J Schwartz, in his famous book The Magic of Thinking Big says: “Belief in success is one basic, absolutely essential ingredient in successful people. Believe, really believe, you can succeed and you will.”

Another important aspect is to identify your goals because ‘a journey to nowhere will take you nowhere’.

Philip Mc-Graw, in his book Life Strategies, says: “If you cannot name, with great specificity, what is it that you want, then you will never be able to step up and claim it.”

The problem crops up when we have to face failure and cope with them. Failures are inevitable, but they should not bother us. In the words of Tom Watson Sr, “If you want to succeed, double your failure rate.” Edison is said to have tried 10,000 times before he was finally successful with the light bulb.

Unfortunately, things are not the same today. The youth is success-hungry and they desperately want it by hook or by crook. They are scared and unprepared to face failures. They have plunged themselves into a rat race of gaining the whole world.

The result of all this chaos is simple:
* We have more degrees but less common sense
* We have taller buildings but shorter temper
* We occupy fancy houses but broken homes
* We have higher incomes but lower morals
* We add years to our life rather than life to our years.
As a teacher, I want to see the young generation successful but with their ‘soul intact’. The simple test of judging your inner self is to feel comfortable with ‘the man in the mirror’.
