Perhaps it was just waiting to happen. It doesn’t come as a surprise that Vickram Sethi is the first to get his hands on the big art pie in the sky. The Artexpo—best described as a mela of the art industry—kicks off on March 14 and the man at the helm of all the hullabaloo is none other than Sethi himself.

It was Sethi who worked with Tina Ambani in the early days of The Harmony Show and we all know that he plays man Friday to Harsh Goenka when it comes to helping him with art camp.

Sethi did go solo with his own gallery at Kala Ghoda, but the Artexpo is his latest venture. “This offers the largest and most diverse gathering of industry professionals in India. Art dealers, professional art buyers, gallery owners, painters, sculptors, photographers, new media artists, architects, interior designers, publishers, retailers, high-profile picture frame makers and others connected to the art circuit, will all be under one roof for the first time,” says Sethi.

The venue is naturally at the exhibition hall of the World Trade Centre, Mumbai, and Trade and Technology Exposition is hosting the event. It’s also a first where art and business come together in a formal way. “Internationally, art fairs play an important role in developing the market. The Chicago Art Fair, Art Asia, Hong Kong, and numerous other fairs have expanded the art market as well as created a secondary market and help markets achieve a degree of sophistication and strength,” says Sethi.

There is a faction that’s critical of art fairs and it isn’t thrilled with this development. Some leading galleries point out that it should have been organised better since this clashes with the Art Dubai Expo, where many galleries are participating. “Expos are usually planned a year in advance giving enough time for the participants to plan their schedules,” says a gallery owner, who wishes to remain anonymous.
