Mosquito breeding remains the highest in September, October and November, and this is the time when maximum deaths occur because of the mosquito bite. Around 100-150 people die of falciparum malaria in the state during this period every year.
Meanwhile, municipal corporations across the state have started exhaustive surveys of mosquito concentration areas.
Incidentally, uptown Navrangpura in Ahmedabad figures among the areas with the highest concentration of mosquitoes.
While falciparum malaria is one of the two types of malaria prevailing in Gujarat, it is responsible for as much as 40-45 percent of malaria deaths in the state.
In case of falciparum malaria, the percentage of infection in Red Blood Cells (RBC) has been recorded to be as high as 40 per cent. As it develops higher percentage of anaemia in the patient, it is deadlier of the two.
“Within the first 14 days of September, the Falciparum death toll in Ahmedabad city has touched eight,” said Dr V K Kohli, the Entemologist associated with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
To eliminate mosquito breeding, 35 lakh water containers across 14 lakh dwellings have been surveyed by the AMC’s health team in the first phase of the survey that concluded on September 8.
Among the high concentration areas in the city are Bapunagar, Kali, Sardarnagar, Tejpur, Navrangpura, Khadia, Jamalpur and Isanpur.
According to health officials, the survey will be done every month to keep a tab on the mosquito concentration.
