Vadodara, February 2 Families of the 11 convicted by a special Mumbai court in the Bilkis Bano rape case on Saturday held a meeting at Mata ke Palla village in Limkheda taluka to apprise the villagers of the ‘bias’ with which the CBI carried out the investigation into the alleged incident in the aftermath of the 2002 Godhra carnage.

Baghu Shah, the father of Radheshyam, is one of the main proponents of these meetings, which are being held in villages all around Randhikpur to evoke sympathy to their cause.

“Public opinion is important in such matters and we are trying to spread awareness about the CBI’s bias during their investigation to garner support,” he said, adding that they were following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi for fighting their case.

He said the CBI as well as the local police had dealt them a raw deal and now they were planning to spread awareness through the district, in Gandhinagar and later in New Delhi.

So far the families have organised three meetings in Singwad, Jetpur and Sakaria, all in Limkheda taluka, after taking permission for the same from the required district officials.

“We only announce our cause in the village and ask all interested to come. Speeches are few and we only ask the villagers, most of whom know of the case, if our sons are guilty or were framed,” Shah said. He said till date the majority have agreed that most of the accused are innocent, and support their cause in full.

“We will appeal to the High Court as soon as possible, but we want to gain support from the public as well,” Shah added.
