Kolkata A couple who reached Watgunj Marriage Registrar office in south Kolkata on Monday was heckled by their family members for going ahead with their marriage plan despite their parents’ reservations.

Anjali Sharma (27), a doctor at Sankar Netralay in Salt Lake, decided to marry Irfan Ali (30), an employee of the same hospital, after their two years courtship. The families of both were, however, against their relationship.

“Both the families were trying to reach an understanding, but nothing worked out as the couple was determined to get married,” said a police officer. According to the police, Anjali left her house on June 6 that led her father R P Sharma, a general physician, to lodge a complaint with Bali Police Station alleging that her daughter had been kidnapped.

On Monday, when the police found that Anjali was under no pressure to marry Irfan, they beat a retreat. But Sharma’s familiy reached there and allegedly attacked Irfan. The family members also forced Anjali to leave Irfan.

Later, Irfan’s family also reached the spot and entered into a scuffle with Anjali’s family. The couple failed to get married. Anjali, who fainted at the spot during the scuffle, was admitted to SSKM hospital.

Meanwhile, the registrar office has lodged a complaint with the police against the family members of the couple for vandalising the office.

“We have received a complaint from the marriage registrar office and started inquiry into it,” said Damayanti Sen, DC, DD.
