Fancy days, fancy ways to protest in Asembly

Kolkata, March 6 No more horns, gongs and toy microphones. The people's representatives are devising newer ways of protest within the Assembly.

On the opening day of the Budget session, Trinamool Congress MLA Sonali Guha stole the show with her eyecatching costume.

Guha arrived in protective goggles on top of her spectacles, gloves and socks -- a close imitation of the costume worn at culling operations. The get-up managed to monopolise the attention of photographers who were there to cover the address delivered by Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

It was not a debut though.

Earlier, she had attempted some equally striking stunts. "We had used whistles and horns to protest against the Nandigram incident last year. Today, I protested against the ineffective handling of the situation after the bird-flu," Guha told The Indian Express.

Unlike Guha, Forward Bloc MLAs -- part of the ruling Left coalition -- could not vent their anger so openly against the Dihata police firing which had claimed lives of their party cadres.

"We wore badges and black ribbons because we had a feeling that the incident won't figure in the Governor's address. It has not been decided if we will continue to do the same though," said Bloc MLA Jiban Prakash Saha.

All through the address, Trinamool MLAs raised slogans and placards. From Nandigram to non-implementation of rural job guarantee scheme, from bird-flu to price rise, the Opposition benches took full advantage of the media presence.

While some MLAs feel that the Trinamool, being the leading party in the Opposition, should play a more "constructive" role instead of trying to disrupt the proceedings, Guha said her methodology is just another way of fulfilling her duty to the people.
