Sarla breathed her last on February 25. She was suffering from thyroid-related problems.
According to Nilang Majmudar, a very close friend of Mukesh, they are also planning to organise a programme for the senior citizens of the city to pay homage to the singer. He reportedly holds prayer ceremony every year in memory of Mukesh and is known in the city for worshipping him.
According to Majmudar, before Mukesh and Sarla got married in 1946, the singer was a regular visitor to the city. “When Sarla was in Mumbai, she stayed in a house that was opposite to Mukesh's. When they fell in love and wanted to marry, there was a lot of opposition from Sarla's family, as she was a Brahmin, whereas Mukesh was a Punjabi. They got married in Kandiville temple in Mumbai secretly in the presence of famous celluloid villain of that era, Motilal,” he said.
Browsing through the old photographs of the couple, he says, “I feel bad that I could not fulfil a promise made to Sarlaben. She had requested for an old record of Mukesh's tour with Lata Mangeshkar in the US and Canada, which had a rare photograph of the singer. I could not reach Mumbai on time.”
He added that he found the record in the city's Friday market in the Walled City area recently and was about to go to Mumbai along with it. He attended her cremation and prayer meeting held at Mukesh's residence in Mumbai.
Recalling the days when he would sit for hours with the couple, talking about Vadodara, on his visits, he said Sarla was missing the city where she was born. She was residing near the Mehta Pol at Pirambika bungalow.
“When Mukesh recorded his first song for the movie Nirdosh in 1941, Sarla was really impressed with him and she would request him to sing the song 'dil jalta hai to jalne de'… But Mukesh used to tease her with the 1965 hit Chand Se Mehbooba Ho, from the movie Himalay Ki God Mein as she had a very fair complexion.”
