Farmers given free emblems at road safety camp

Ludhiana The Department of Farm Power and Machinery of Punjab Agricultural University, and local traffic police, jointly organised a road safety camp at Punjab Agricultural University today. The camp, held with an objective to educate the farmers on safe driving of their tractor-trolleys was part of the 20th National Road Safety Week being observed from January 1 to 7.

About 60 farmers, who had come with the tractor trolleys were explained how fixing of slow-moving vehicle emblem on the rear side of their vehicle could prevent accidents. Participants were given demonstration on fixing the emblem and were also given free emblem. Society for Accident Aids and Traffic Help (SAATH), an NGO, had provided 3,000 emblems for free distribution among tractor-trolley owners.

Presiding over the camp, PAU Director of Extension Education, Dr NS Malhi said, the emblem though, a small simple reflector, is a valuable tool to check accidents and save many lives. “We must change our mind-set and strictly follow traffic rules for making life safer for ourself and for others” he remarked. “Three Es — education, engineering and enforcement — are important for road safety,” he added.

Earlier, Pritpal Singh, Road Engineer, Traffic Police, informed that about 95,000 deaths occurred every year due to road accidents. In tractor-trolley accidents, about 60 deaths occurred every year in Ludhiana alone. He stressed on strictly observing traffic rules while driving.

The Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering, Dr PK Gupta, Coordinator of Research (Agri Engineering), Dr VK Sehgal, SP, Traffic, Roopinder Singh and DSP, Traffic, Gurdeep Singh, were present on the occasion.
