Pune, January 4 The Pune support group for farmers protesting against the Alibaug Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Reliance Energy and Tata Power are demanding that a written letter of assurance be given by the Chief Minister to implement Section 13 which includes outlining the area, and rehabilitation with least displacement of the affected farmers. With nearly 4000 acres of agricultural land near Alibaug, 120 km north east of Mumbai, to be used for the said projects, the farmers have been protesting against the same since last year.

A four-hour meeting was held before the Council Hall by the group in support of the farmers who are protesting in Alibaug and a letter was later handed over to the Divisional Commissioner office outlining the demands of a people’s SEZ to be forwarded to the CM./

“We are demanding that in the said area, where the farmers undertook a day and night agitation, have the farmers and the corporates enter into a dialogue and work out a pro people’s rehabilitation scheme rather than just a corporate one, said one of the members Dr Anand Phadke.

The government officers instead of outlining the area to be acquired with least displacement issued under Section 4 which is to begin the acquisition. The farmers were demanding that Section 13 be issued and the Chief Minister after a 28-day agitation by the farmers has orally agreed for the same but we want a written letter from him, said Phadke on the purpose of their agitation.

The Pune support group has also threatened to intensify their agitation if the letter of assurance is not given as well a dialogue being demanded does not work out. “We want a people’s SEZ rather than a corporate one, wherein people decide what kind of agriculture projects can be worked upon in the area rather then they deciding what to do,’’said Phadke. The farmers too will extend their agitation to Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur.
