The land is likely to be allotted to the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMTB) to set up a new port.

At a huge public meeting organised on the said land on Saturday evening, which saw participation of over 10,000 people, mostly farmers, the leaders resolved to protest against the move till their last breath.

Ahmedabad-based Gujarat Lok Samiti leaders, including veteran Gandhian Chunibhai Vaidya, extended their support to the farmers.

They said the government was not the sole owner of the natural resources and that it should act as a trustee.

Vithalbhai Dudhatra, BKS Junagadh unit president, said: “We oppose any such move to allot grazing land for industrial purpose. If any person or power comes in our way, we will resist and act firmly to save the grazing land.”

Dhirubhai Bhankhar, another BKS leader, said the land allotment would prove a disaster for the agriculture sector and cattle rearing.

“We will not tolerate this. If necessary, BKS will launch an agitation on the lines of Nandigram. Farmers and villagers are ready to die, but will not give away the land,” he added.

According to Bhankhar, industrial groups will fetch limestone layers from the land in question. It will directly affect farming in the area, as these layers provide natural protection to agriculture lands from salinity ingress. In the absence of such layers, the sea water will destabilise groundwater table, which will result in disappearance of sweet water, he said.
