Kolkata The fate of Ranjit Duley, the headmaster who was abducted by armed Maoists, hangs in the balance as the 48-hour deadline set by the Maoists expired on Sunday evening. Frantic family members continued their appeal to Kishenji for his release.

The state government, meanwhile, seems to be in no mood to release the six villagers in Bankura who are accused of killing Officer In-charge Rabi Lochan Mitra of Sarenga police station in exchange for Duley.

The security forces raided Bhalukbhasa forests in Goaltore on Sunday to trace the abducted headmaster.

The forces engaged in a gun battle for over two hours near the Makli gram panchayat area. According to sources, Gurucharan Hembram, a member of Maoist-backed Sidhu Kanhu Gana Militia, was killed in the gun battle and five Maoists were injured. The headmaster could not be traced but 37 people have been detained.
