Kolkata His father was shot dead while accompanying him for a job interview aboard the Lucknow-bound Amritsar Mail. Ironically a day later, Chandan Gupta, son of late Shivparasad Gupta looks all set to get a coveted Railways job as compensation for his father’s death.

Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the family of the deceased and a job for a member of his family.

“The minister (Banerjee) has decided to give Rs 2 lakh for the victim’s family. We will also give a job to one of the family members. It is a very sad incident and we are taking steps to ensure that such a thing does not happen again,” said a senior Railways official.

The family members say they are ready to accept the job offer. “At least Chandan will get a job now. He was going for a job interview to Lucknow with his father when the incident occurred,” said Ramesh Gupta, brother of Shivprasad.

Ramesh, however, pointed out the lack of security on the train. “There is no security for passengers in trains. Railway officials did not even bother to inform us. We learnt of the incident only after Chandan called us from his cellphone. When we went to the Howrah GRP, they did not help us either,” added Ramesh.

Shivparasad and Chandan were travelling from Howrah to Lucknow on Amritsar Mail when around 12 dacoits boarded the train at Shimultolla near Jhanjha station and started looting passengers. When Shivprasad refused to let go of his belongings, the dacoits shot at him thrice from close range killing him on the spot. Chandan also sustained injuries after being attacked with sharp-edged weapons. The father-son duo belongs to the Rameshwar Malia first bylane in Howrah. Shivparasad is a businessman.
