According to a statement issued here, a new, state-of-the-art bone scanning machine was installed to detect bone calcium. About 86 patients were examined by senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Jagdip Madaan and his team.
About 80 percent patients were found to have weak bones in form of osteopenia and osteoporosis. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Madaan said that at least 58 percent of total population has osteoporosis, as per the latest data released by AIIMS, New Delhi.
He highlighted that surveys have revealed that Punjabis like milk and milk-related products, and have a higher incidence of kidney stones. Dr Madaan pointed out that 80 per cent hip fractures in India are because of osteoporotic bones as compared to the western world, where only 20 hip fractures are osteoporotic. He highlighted that all these fractures need some kind of surgery.
Dr Madaan said such camps are aimed at detecting osteoporosis, imparting health education and creating greater awareness in people. He asserted that persons with a sedentary life style, obese, woman after menopause, diabetics, those who take more alcohol, smokers and patients on medicines for asthma, thyroid and heart are prone to osteoporosis.
Dr Madaan suggested that such persons should undergo bone ultrasound, so that a proper calcium therapy can be stared.
