It isn’t the first and surely not the last. But the student organisers are still as nervous, disorganized, hard-pressed for time and ready for fun unlimited. Each heading to a different direction to complete the decided chore and each with a determined assignment, Jhankaar 2008, the National Youth Festival of Panjab University, “has had us on our toes for over two months,” chirps Gagan of UIET, before vanishing into the thick crowd that dominates Stucee. The register counter abuzz with those who want to part take in THE festival of the year, a street play (which is not part of Jhankaar) in on full swing and the spectators loitering aimlessly. “Interactive, informative, entertaining and a platform for budding artists,” is how they describe the grand fest.

The budget glided to “Rs 15 lakh”, the schedule flaunting 26 events, a star night, a fashion show, a rock show and invites sent to over 250 colleges, there’s nothing amiss. “It’s taken many days and sleepless nights to get it to a success point,” smiles Simar Mann, the Convenor, as he guides us to the top floor of the Students’ Centre, which now is a kaleidoscope of vibrancy, serenity, tranquility and creativity. “This is the venue of the rangoli competition,” chips in Shradha Sapra of DCET department, who is taking care that “all goes well here.” The theme being National Integrity, Manisha of Home Science College (she got the first prize) played with blue, yellow and pink and got religions together, Sonia Sahni of SDAC, Sector 46 (third prize winner), carved a woman’s face to bring in closeness of Gods to human beings and used flowers and diyas to bring out the peace within. An on-the-spot competition, here “the neatness and the thought that went into the concepts is worth appreciating,” said the judges.

The first floor’s slotted for Cartoon and Collage making competitions, “there are about 29 participants in all,” Sonal Kapoor, one of the organisers, tells us as she updates us about the topics — Fashion and Technology and ‘India in 20-20 cricket’. While this was a relatively quiet room, the Law Auditorium came alive with geet, gazals and folk songs, English Auditorium with debates and Evening auditorium with declamation. The star night finalized is “Gurdas Mann special”, while coming up in the next three days is talent that will display elements of theatre, dance forms and literature. Watch out!
