Fifth P1 polio case in 2008 confirmed in Delhi

New Delhi An eighteen-month-old boy has become the latest victim of the deadly polio virus. The child had been infected with the virulent P1 polio virus last mont,the fifth case of polio reported from Delhi in 2008.

The child was living in the Capital for two months during which he got infected by the virus. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), which confirmed the diagnosis, the child was from Unnao near Kanpur. According to sources, the family left for Unnao soon after the child developed paralysis.

This is also Delhi’s fourth P1 polio case in a year. The P1 strain is the most dangerous strain since it can cause an outbreak and travel over long distances. P1 is known to cause paralysis in children more frequently than any other strain of the virus.

“As per our information, the child had been in the Capital for two months. Our medical officers are investigating the case,” said Rakesh Bihari, Health Secretary, Delhi government.
