The committee was appointed after the villagers protested against the Rs 400-crore project on the 100 acre village land. The villagers have blocked the road to the construction site for over a month now.
Alka Joshi of the Remove Dow, Save Pune movement said in a press release that the committee is an eye wash as the proposal for the same was earlier passed by experts from NCL without actually seeing the project report.
“The company is refusing to accept any liabilities for the 1984-Bhopal gas tragedy and is refusing to remove thousand tones of toxic waste left behind by the Union Carbide India Ltd (Dow took over Union Carbide Corporation in 2001). This has seeped into the groundwater poisoning wells and handpumps with chemicals known to cause cancer. The result is that, even today children are born with birth defects,’’ said Joshi.
