Hindi Cinema — An Insider’s View is a collection of the late film critic Anil Saari’s writings on Hindi cinema. Saari began writing on the nature and popularity of Hindi cinema more than 30 years ago, much before this cinematic genre gained credibility in academic circles. This volume shows how Saari combined his knowledge of Indian society and history to make a rich interpretation of the narrative structures, aesthetics, and institutions of Hindi cinema.
Muzaffar Ali, filmmaker, launched the book. Sunit Tandon , CEO Lok Sabha TV read out extracts.
Sociologist Dr Ashish Nandy, social scientist Partha Chatterjee, along with Sunit Tandon, CEO, Lok Sabha TV, Parsa Venkateshwara Rao, Senior Assistant Editor, DNA and N Madhavan, Associate Editor, Hindustan Times were present on the occasion.
Dr Ashish Nandi, also a noted film critic said, “I was fond of him because his interest in Bombay cinema was unique”.
“The essays have value as reflections of a critical insider on Indian cinema, the industry and film policy in India. There is no such writing available,” said M K Raghavendra, winner, National Award for Best Film Film Critic (1997) and author or Seduced by the Familiar: Narration and Meaning in Indian Popular Cinema (OUP).
A panel discussion was moderated by Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, journalist and media communicator was also held.
