Pune, January 8 The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation on Tuesday gave permission for handing over an advance of Rs 1.50 crore to the irrigation department for desilting of Mula-Mutha rivers between Sangam Bridge and Bundgarden.

Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi had tabled a proposal before the committee, despite the PMC witnessing a row over the payment of advance amount to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) for the four proposed flyovers. The committee meet also witnessed opposition from the Congress, who held the view that the irrigation department should not be paid before the work.

The desilting project is to be done under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The proposal tabled before the committee states that the work of desilting the river stretch is to be carried out with the help of the irrigation department. The irrigation department would provide the necessary machinery and equipment used for the purpose, which would cost Rs 2.15 crore. While seeking approval for the total amount, the proposal also seeks Rs 1.5 crore as advanced amount for the irrigation department and for paying the remaining amount in a phase-wise manner.

The committee also gave approval to the administration’s proposal of putting restrictions on programmes by private organisations along with a complete ban of any political functions in gardens and parks. However, the civic administration will not allow any programme in the garden if there are objections from local resident of the area.

The administration said there was no policy so far to decide on allowing use of its gardens and parks by private organisations for various purposes. “It is becoming difficult with many organisations simultaneously seeking permission for use of PMC gardens and parks for various purpose like cultural function and drawing competition,” the proposal said. The civic administration will charge Rs 1,000 as the fee for the programme and additional Rs 1,000 as deposit. The programmes to create awareness regarding nature and environment will be allowed free of cost.
