Two days after the Dredging Corporation of India threatened to withdraw their dredgers from Haldia due to non-payment of dues, the Finance Ministry has agreed to release the payment to the Shipping Ministry.

The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) owes Rs 550 crore to the Dredging Corporation as an outstanding payment up to 2008 and around Rs 478 crore as a dredging subsidy in 2009-10.

Mukul Roy, Minister of State for Shipping, said: “The dredging subsidy should be released within a day or two.”

With the falling depth at Auckland and Jellingham, the removal of the dredgers would have led to a closure of the Haldia dock.

“We have heard that we would be getting the amount. It would certainly help us in making the payments to the DCI,” said A Majumdar, acting-chairman of KoPT.

“We heard that the standing parliamentary committee had decided on the payment after Roy went to Delhi to speak to the Union Finance Minister regarding the issue,” said a source at KoPT.
