Rajkot/Mumbai The prevailing financial crisis in the diamond industry has claimed another life, with a 22-year-old resident of Lilapar in Jasdan taluka of Rajkot allegedly committing suicide on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Haresh Ramani, ended his life by jumping into a village well, the police said, adding that the body was fished out on Monday night. This is the fifth incident wherein a jobless diamond polisher committed suicide in the Saurashtra region since December last year.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ramani might have jumped into the well on Monday. “Postmortem report is awaited,” said a Jasdan police officer.

The police said Ramani had been working at a diamond polishing unit in Jasdan and returned to his village Lilapar during the Diwali vacation.

While Amreli and Bhavnagar districts have become hubs for diamond polishing units in Saurashtra, in Rajkot, the industry has some presence on the outskirts of Rajkot city and across Jasdan taluka.
