“Around midnight, we received a frantic call informing us about the fire and we dispatched 10 fire engines with tankers and were able to bring the fire under control in around two and a half hours,” said Chief Fire Officer Potphode. The firemen were able to salvage three of the four rooms of the 590 by 1000 sq ft godown, while the fire was restricted to the one room containing around 1400-1500 gunny sacks of wheat and around 300 sacks of rice
Fire officials said that the room had also served as a storage space for documents and the papers scattered around the sacks had fuelled the fire. “Though the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, we suspect either a case of spontaneous combustion or an electrical short-circuit,” said Potphode.
