Kolkata The Howrah district jail authorities are facing problems in releasing inmates as the fire that ravaged the jail on January 1 destroyed many documents in its office. This has been revealed by Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen who visited the jail on Sunday to take stock of the situation.

“We are trying to find a solution to the problem,” Sen said, adding that 28 prisoners had been released till Saturday.

The two prisoners - Rahul Mullick and Suraj Mullick, whose transfer orders had triggered a riot in the Jail on January 1 - have been shifted to other jails. While Rahul has been shifted to the Presidency Jail, Suraj has been moved to the Alipore Central Jail, sources in the police said. The situation, however, remains tense on the jail premises, as a huge contingent of police and paramilitary personnel are posted there.

While inspecting the jail, Sen interacted with officers, guards, inmates and their relatives.

One of the complaints that the Home Secretary received during his visit was that there are only 50 personnel to guard 595 inmates lodged in the Howrah jail. Sen said that he would look into the complaint. On January 1, inmates clashed with guards after the transfer orders of Mallick brothers, accused in the murder of a couple at Howrah, reached the jail. Inmates also set the office of jail superintendent on fire.
