Kolkata A fire broke out in some unauthorised shanties near the railway track at New Alipore station at 9.20 am. Five fire engines were rushed to prevent the fire from spreading, but locals said that the strong winds spread the fire. About 70 houses were destroyed in the fire.

The fire was brought under control by around 10.30 am. No casualty was, however, reported. A man had reportedly fallen sick due to the smoke. He was administered first-aid at the MR Bangur hospital.

Around 300 to 400 slum-dwellers live in the shanties.

Gopal Bhattacharya, Director of Fire and Emergency Services, said: “The fire probably started during cooking. Our engines rushed to the spot as soon as we got the news.”
