Fire in JJ colony, 70 shacks gutted

Chandigarh Seventy shacks in Colony Number 5 were gutted in a fire that broke out late on Wednesday night. No loss of life was reported in the incident. Fire officials said they received a call about the fire around 11.30 pm. “The fire posed a danger to the entire colony. We immediately pressed seven fire tenders into service. We managed to douse the flames in two hours’ time,” they said.

The exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained. Officials said the kundi connection might have led to a short circuit, resulting in the fire. Many people in the colony lost most of their belongings in the fire. The UT administration has announced a compensation of Rs 5,000 to each of those whose jhuggis were gutted. Area councillor Ram Sumer Morya said a community kitchen was held for the affected families.
