Firm to compensate for not releasing shares

Chandigarh, January 7 The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has directed Stock Holding Corporation of India, Sector 17, to pay compensation of Rs 10,000 for not releasing 50 shares to Om Prakash Chopra, an Ambala resident. The corporation has also been directed to give Rs 2,100 as costs of litigation.

The petitioner had taken a loan against pledging of shares with the bank. The shares included shares of GTL, Sri Adhikari and Videocon.

It was said that the petitioner refunded his entire loan on June 2002 and all shares were released to him except 50 shares of GTL.

Chopra was informed by the bank that the said shares were to be separately pledged for which the petitioner was required to fill up a separate form.

The petitioner in his complaint stated that he had completed all the formalities and the bank officials assured him that the shares would be released. in the complaint it was written the shares were not released by the bank despite several visits made by the him to the company. Chopra alleged that he was deprived from selling the 50 shares.

In reply, the bank stated that the petitioner’s account was closed in July, 2002 and the complaint was filed in 2006, hence it was time barred.
