The farm aims at helping achieve the UN’s millennium development goal of “right to food” as per the Rome Declaration of the World Food Security, 1996.

The farm has come up on an area of six acres and another 12 acres are being developed to cultivate spirulina (Arthospira platensis), which has gained popularity as the ‘new miracle drug’.

An edible micro-algae, spirulina grows rapidly under favourable conditions and is a rich source of proteins and vitamins. The bio-tech farm is the brainchild of Dasuya-based Vikrant Sandal, who completed his mechanical engineering and went on to pursue his MBA from Oxford University.

Chandigarh-based Hash Group of Companies, of which Sandal is the chairman, has helped in setting up the farm. “Although spirulina is cultivated in many countries, the largest farm is located in California,” says Sandal.

“Spirulina is grown in man-made cultivation ponds, which help keep out undesirable algae, micro-bacteria and parasites. Exposure to sunlight increases growth, and immediately after harvest, it is filtered to get a thick consistency, dehydrated and put in oxygen-protective containers,” he says.

A processing unit will be set up soon, he adds.

Sandal says spirulina is a wonder food and beneficial for malnourished people. Three grams of the algae consumed daily for three months can help regulate cholesterol level, reduce obesity, lower blood pressure, increase immunity and energise the body, he claims.

“The conditions in Dasuya are congenial for its cultivation. We have been educating farmers to take up this venture,” he adds.

Manish Uprety, UN’s special envoy to South Asia, had inaugurated the farm.

The UN, through a missive, has confirmed that Hash Biotech Labs is now the official working partner and technology facilitator to inter-governmental institution for the use of micro-algae spirulina against malnutrition (IIMSAM).

Sandal claims Hash Biotech Labs is the only corporate entity, which has been granted this status.
