The institute is my second home, as I have spent five years of my life on the campus. It was a great learning experience. Being the first student of the institute, I was allotted the first roll number. My nickname was Roll Number One.
Tell us about your academic achievements in the institute and your first assignment after you passed out?
I was in the first batch of B.Tech course in Electrical Engineering in 1960. There was no Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) at that time. We got admission on the basis of merit after filling in the application form. Soon after completing my degree, I went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for pursuing Masters in Electrical Engineering and Masters in Management degree.
Tell us about your days in the institute?
Though there was no advanced infrastructure at that time, even the teachers were “borrowed” from the Kanpur University, we had all kinds of fun including ragging.
What were your achievement as a researcher and social worker?
A. I remember the first IBM computer came to the institute on a bullock cart. I was so inspired that after completing my studies, I did a lot of work to develop the Internet architecture. I am co-holder of 12 US patents on semiconductor drying and cleaning technologies. In 1978-79, I returned to Allahabad and worked for some grassroot-level projects. I was felicitated with the Community Service Award by a business chamber.
What is your role as the chief financial officer of the new foundation?
As the chief financial officer of IIT-K Foundation and alumnus of the institute, we have managed to generate $1.2 million from around 500 alumni members. The foundation now plans to give Rs 50 crore to the institute in the Golden Jubilee year i.e. 2010.
