Lucknow Five policemen in Hatras — three of them sub-inspectors — have been suspended after a man arrested in a murder case allegedly committed suicide in the lock-up.

Police said Mahipal Singh (28), hanged himself with a scarf on Wednesday night. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The suspended policemen are SI Ram Autar Karwal, Praveen Singh, L Yadav and Constables Vinod Kumar and Chandra Shekhar.

The Superintendent of Police, Hatras, Jitendra Pratap Singh, said Mahipal’s relative Lakhan Singh had filed a complaint, accusing the policemen of beating up Mahipal in the lock-up.

“We are looking into the matter,” he said. According to the postmortem report, death occurred due to hanging.

Mahipal was the suspect in the murder of an 8-year-old girl, the daughter of one Amar Singh.

On February 2, after she had gone missing, he had lodged an FIR against Mahipal at the Sikandararaau police station. After her body was recovered from a field two days later, the police arrested Mahipal.
