Kolkata The Detective Department of Kolkata Police today arrested five persons involved in the antique theft from Lahabari in Kolkata.

The accused — Shamim Haoladar (30), Idrish Lashkar (23), Ataur Mollah (23), Mohosin Mollah (27) and Sheikh Kalam (27) — were picked up from Canning, Bedberia and Uttarbhag in South 24-Parganas.

The police have recovered a huge collection of stolen antique pieces worth crores. The pieces include several bronze, brass, French and British porcelain statues of 15-16th centuries, several oil paintings of Rosenberg and robes of the zamindars of old Kolkata.

“The arrested persons are burglars who steal antiques from old houses of north Kolkata. They have contacted antique dealers of the city and suburbs to sell them. We are looking for the dealers also,” said Damayanti Sen, Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department.
